Whether it’s because you’re a born procrastinator, or you’ve just been too swamped to get the geeks in your life Christmas gifts, we’ve got a last minute helping hand for you.
Here are ideas for last minute geek Christmas gifts.
Games – digital downloads
Gamers will never say no to a game they haven’t played before. One problem could be the shipping time, since it’s already the 23rd, but thank goodness for digital downloads. You can easily send a game via gifting features of some sites, so your gift can be “delivered” in time.
Steam gives you the option to gift your purchase to anyone you want. It doesn’t matter whether the recipient is already a Steam user or not. He will receive the gift via email – personalized to sweeten the deal. You can add your own message, and instructions on how to redeem the gift are included.
Amazon’s Video Games section also gives you the option to gift your purchase. I suggest visiting the Digital Video Games Deals page ASAP, as they have some great games which are largely discounted. Okay, these are old games, but still…Check these out:
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim [Online Game Code] – PC download, now only $4.99! Get it here.
- METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE [Online Game Code] – PC download, now only $7.49. Get it here.
- Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag [Online Game Code] – PC download, now only $20.00. Get it here.

For the readers in your life, eBooks are the best way to go. Barnes & Noble’s Instant Gifting feature is perfect for those who use any of the models in the NOOK line. You can either send the gift instantly, or you can indicate a date when the gift is to be “delivered”.
For Kindle users, it’s the Amazon Kindle store, naturally. Check out their 12 Days of Deals – it’s the last day today, so don’t tarry. You can even gift a subscription to Kindle Unlimited, which gives the member unlimited reading from over 700,000 books and unlimited listening to thousands of audiobooks. Membership options are 6 months, 12 months, or 24 months. Gift a Kindle Unlimited membership here.
If you ask me, this is the best option for last minute geek Christmas gifts. Unless you know exactly what the recipient wants, you run the risk of giving a game or book that won’t be played or read. If you go the gift card route, then the recipient will have the freedom to purchase whatever he wants. The downside is that he’ll know exactly how much you paid for the gift, and while this is not an issue for me, it might be for some.
First up, Amazon Gift Cards. Gift cards range from $0.50 to $2,000 and can be delivered via email. You can customize the cards, so they are more personal. There are restrictions regarding their use, but they’re reasonable enough.
For your Apple-loving friends, iTunes Gift Cards are your best bet. They can be used on the iTunes Store, App Store, iBooks Store, and Mac App Store. You can buy iTunes gift card in any whole-dollar amount between $10 and $100 and then have it emailed whenever you like.
