First your phone got smart. Then your home. Your car too. But what about your bike? A new Kickstarter bent on making bicycles the latest to be connected to the Internet of Things with the new SmartHalo device.
While riding a bike has long been the exercise tool of choice for those who want to stay healthy and environmentally friendly at the same time, it’s also a way for many city-dwellers to get to and from work or a social gathering on any lazy Sunday afternoon, easily bypassing streets clogged with cars going nowhere fast. But for a long time, cyclists have been at a disadvantage compared to their behind-the-wheel counterparts. Unless you are familiar with every nook and cranny of the city you’re in, it’s not so easy to find your destination. Want to get to that hot Chinese place you’ve heard about? Sure, you can pull it up on your phone, but it’s not smart to steer and brake with one hand while staring at Google Maps in the other as you zip through the streets of New York City or London. But it’s also not smart to stop and check your location at every turn by stopping and pulling out your phone to check where you are. And do you really want to mount a clunky GPS device to your handlebars? Just try hearing the directions over the traffic noise. That’s almost as distracting has holding the phone itself. What if the whole process could be made simpler, while also keeping track of your travel stats and giving you directions to your destination in a simple, easy to view way?
At first, I was a bit wary of what SmartHalo could do. It’s meant to be permanently mounted on your bike, even when you have it chained up outside? Yep. How do you protect from theft? Maybe I’m just not very trusting. But the video below helped put my mind at ease. It’s got turn by turn directions expressed in the simplest and most intuitive way possible. It’s got Bluetooth connected features that tells you everything from how far you’ve ridden to how many calories you’ve burned. And, yes, it’s got an anti-theft alarm. Check it out for yourself…
The SmartHalo has already reached its full funding in less than a day and today it just doubled that. Biker Backers should expect to get their hands on their SmartHalo device by May 2016. Deadline to pitch in your support is September 24th, 2015.
