This is the kind of news that sucks to deliver. It hurts to have to say, and it is the kind of news that makes everyone’s day a little sadder, but that is part of this gig. Sadly, actor Anton Yelchin passed away after an incredibly tragic accident that is all but without explanation. The actor (best known as Chekov is the most recent Star Trek reboot) was found at 1 a.m Sunday morning by friends, crushed between his own car and a brick mailbox. Foul play is not suspected, though the circumstances do sound very odd.
Regardless, the actor just unintentionally started the actor version of the 27 club, and that is not a club you want to be any part of. We would just like to take a moment and give our condolences to Anton Yelchin’s family and friends. We think we know someone because we see them on screen, but we only know their work personas (and even that still has a huge impact on our lives). He was far too young and had a career in front of him that was already laid out in the stars, wordplay intended and said with all grace.
From Star Trek and Charlie Bartlett to Fright Night and Only Lovers Left Alive, Anton Yelchin has an amazing back catalog of work that is well-worth checking out, if only to reaffirm the massive talent we lost way too soon.
Rest in peace, our space-bound friend.
