I was watching Apocalypse
Now How on TV earlier and I got this hankering for all things solar. You know, the Milky Way, blackholes, the sun, the moon – anything related to these things. And when I saw the Sun and Moon Jars over at Think Geek, my geek radar just went wonkers!
These two lights work based on very simple technology. Get a mason jar (you know what they are, right? They’re the glass jars used for canning vegetables and fruits), throw in some solar cells, batteries, and low energy LED lamps, and you have a unique lighting fixture.
The Sun and Moon Jars are basically the same, except for the color of the glow that they emit. The Sun Jar emits a warm yellow light while the Moon Jar gives off a cool blue glow. There is no need for a switch for either lamp as a sensor – a rather smart one – is installed within the fixture. When the ambient light becomes too low, the jars immediately switch on.
As for the power, you need to have sunlight – real sunlight – to charge these nifty Jars. They come with AA batteries which are rechargeable, so no need to worry about changing the batteries all the time. All that you need to do is place the Jars on your window sill or your porch for several hours. You do not even have to worry about the elements harming your lamp – mason jars are known for being watertight.
I’d be more than willing to part with $34.99 for these!
