Need a perfect backup? Or maybe some fault tolerance? Or maybe you just want to access your data faster than 7200/10000/15000 rpm? RAID is the answer. But what’s what? There are at least 11 kinds of RAID, not to mention the JABOD (Just A Bunch Of Disks) formation. Some of it’s good for some things, some for others. So what should you use? And what are they all, anyway?
For your desktop, you’re probably interested in RAID 0 (striping) for speed, 1 (mirroring) for backup, or 10 or 0+1 (for both). But in the server world, things can be a bit more sophisticated.
So go take a look at this primer on RAID formats and see what’s best for you… and learn about the others, too. You never know when it’ll come in handy.
