The Official Star Trek 50th Anniversary Convention will take place on August 3-7, 2016 at The Rio Suites Hotel in Las Vegas, although it seems to me that there has been little fanfare about the 50th anniversary of the greatest science fiction franchise ever. (Okay, here come the arguments.)
We’re not going to keep quiet about this momentous occasion, though. If Mattel can release Uhura, Kirk, and Spock Barbie dolls (I kid you not), we can do one better. Well, not exactly us, but the awesome guys at Smart Pop Books. We love us our action figures, but books are whole different story.
(Celebration idea: Get Your Buzz On With These Star Trek Drinks)
So, Smart Pop Books have come up with Boarding the Enterprise, an “eclectic mix of essays on the groundbreaking original Star Trek series”.
The book features Star Trek writers D. C. Fontana and David Gerrold, as well as other sci-fi writers and academics. This is serious stuff that any Star Trek fan wouldn’t want to miss out on. After reading this book, you’ll have quite a bit of inside knowledge that would give you ammunition to demolish the arguments of your worst/best Star Trek discussion sparring partner.
What can you find between the book’s covers?
Behind-the-scenes anecdotes, discussion on the show’s enduring appeal and influence, and analysis of some of the classic features of the show, including Spock’s irrationality, Scotty’s pessimism, and the lack of seatbelts on the Enterprise. The impact of the cultural phenomenon on subsequent science-fiction television programs is explored, as well as how the show laid the foundation for the science fiction genre to break into the television medium.
With only that to go on, you should be convinced that Boarding the Enterprise ought to be part of your library, but to give you more, you can check out excerpts here. Also, check out Smart Pop Books on Facebook for updates on really cool geeky books.
Of course, we’re not going to let the anniversary go by with giving our Star Trek readers something to enjoy. Thanks to Smart Pop Books, we’re giving away TWO copies of the book.
All you need to do is the usual stuff we ask of you for all of giveaways.
The only limitation for this giveaway is that you have to be in the US or Canada to join.
